Life Around Us - Wrap Up!

Throughout this month at Pretend to Bee we have been showcasing our awesome animal fancy dress. We went from roaming woodlands to travelling the high seas, where we learnt about some of the awesome animals who live there. However there is much much more to discover in each of these habitats. So here is a habitat highlight of some of our favourites!

And don’t forget,if you sign up to our newsletter today, you will get an un-bee-lievable 15% off your next order!

Covered in trees and other vegetation, woodland is estimated to covers 25% of Europe and is the home to thousands of species. One creature which loves to play in these woodlands are Foxes! These playful creatures can be found on almost every continent around the world, with the smallest species - the fennec fox - being celebrated as Algeria’s national animal. The fox’s links to nature not only lies in the ground beneath our feet where they often make dens, but also in the night skies above. If like these nocturnal animals, you go out at night, you might be able to see the Vulpecular star constellation in the northern sky, which translates to ‘little fox’.

This is not the only area our perception of these furry little creatures is influenced in nature. The well-known phrase ‘cunning as a fox’ is represented within mythology. These clever animals are depicted as mischievous spirit guides well known for their ability to adapt to every situation that comes their way, just like how their fur density varies depending on the seasons!

The most common species is the red fox, and in Pretend to Bee’s adorable Fox cape,, kids can embrace the curious nature of these crafty creatures. The auburn colouring of the cape and the detailed fox hood will have children feeling like the cutest fox cub in the forest!

This month we even delved into life as mini-beasts found across the world - like Spiders! With over 45,000 different species, Spiders help keep the eco-system running with by pollinating plants and eating harmful insects. These incredible arachnids are well known for having 8 eyes and legs and their ability to produce is incredibly strong spider silk, but did you know that there is something else which makes them unique? They are one of the few animals to have blue blood! This fascinating feature occurs as oxygen binds to hemocyanin in the blood which contains copper, rather than binding to haemoglobin which contains iron, like in humans!

Spiders can be found in most types of habitats, like woodlands and desserts - there are even spiders that have adapted to live underwater! The Diving Bell Spider spend most of its life underwater, building a bell-shaped web between submerged plant stems there. These clever creatures even have a constant oxygen supply by using their body hair to take air from the surface and fill their web with air bubbles! It is easy to see how these ingenious arachnids have inspired much-loved characters like Charlotte from Charlotte’s Web and the famous Superhero – Spiderman!

Children can learn through play as a cute bug in Pretend to Bee’s Spider themed Tabard! The 8 orange and purple fuzzy legs on the body and the plush antenna on the hood truly bring this costume to life with the magic of play! Plus, the foam padding throughout the tabard keeps the costumes shape and quality whilst keeping kids protected as they spin their own web of fun!
