Stories at Sea!

Lusca

Believed to inhabit the waters surrounding the Caribbean, is the Lusca! Over the centuries, sailors have depicted the Lusca as anywhere between 75 and 200 ft long, with the head and razor-sharp teeth of a shark, and a multitude of Octopus tentacles. Being so large this hybrid sea creature, is said to be the cause of whirlpools that pull ships down to the ocean floor as well as, causing tidal current to occur at the entrances of inland caves which connect to the vast network of underwater caves in the Bahamas that it is believed to lurk in!

All children can pretend to splash about in our jaw-some Shark themed cape! The iconic features which identify a shark are depicted with the utmost detail through the plush dorsal fin on the rear of the cape and the felt teeth which frame the hood, mimicking the hundreds of teeth residing in a shark’s jaws. Key characteristics of these enchanting sea creatures is captured in one of the most famous mermaid tales worldwide – The Little Mermaid! Published in 1837, this fin-tastic book by Hans Christian Anderson won the hearts of both children and adults as it followed a Mermaid Princess on a journey of curiosity and love to gain an eternal life through her selfless acts.

Black Cats

To those who sailed the seven seas, Black Cats were seen as a symbol of good luck and a protector of the ship. This superstition grew from a cat’s ability to hunt stowaway rodents, which would chew through ropes, eat food supplies, and spread disease if left unchecked. In return for protecting the ship, cats were very well looked after. To add to the spectacular beliefs which follow these meow-velous pets, sailors also believed that cats could predict and control the weather. Thus, having a cat onboard would provide good luck in a ships ability to avoid dangerous weather. However, this also meant that if the Cat was treated poorly, they could curse storms and nine years of bad luck upon the ship.

In our paww-sitively purr-fect Black Cat dress-up set, you can nimbly run and climb about the ship. The soft plush of the detachable tail belt and the cat headpiece bring to life the pink felt nose and tabby ears, surely making you the cutest cat around! Kraken

Believed to dwell at the bottom of the ocean off the coast of Norway, the Kraken is one of the most notorious Sea beasts believed to exist! From being the main character in Norse legends to cameo appearances in popular pirate movies, this giant Octopus is often depicted as having a body so large it could be mistaken for an island, and even causing whirlpools as it swims! Only coming to the water’s surface to feed, this would cause large gatherings of fish in certain areas. When sailors and fishermen realised this, they would often attempt to cast their nets directly above and catch the fish. This obviously would bother the tentacled creature, and it is said that in retaliation for taking its food, the Kraken would use its incredible strength and flexibility to capsize the ships that disrupted its feeding.
